EWO has been updated with a new message from Emma! :D

I’m now back at Uni having spent January filming more scenes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  It is absolutely wonderful to be back and see all my friends again – and of course to get back to studying! Thanks so much for your support and kind words about my People Tree Collection, it was really nerve racking, but I’m so glad it is being received so well and let’s hope we can begin to make a difference. Love Emma

You’ve done acting, modelling, and now you’re designing. Is this the future for Emma Watson?
Oh, I don’t have any plans to be a designer. I’m doing this range because I really care about fair-trade and ethical fashion. I’m so pleased that I got involved, but I don’t want to take all the credit for being the designer because I haven’t trained as a designer or even gone to art college – in fact, I had no idea about the amount of work involved at the outset!

You are something of a fashionista, but were you completely new to fair-trade fashion?
The first time I heard about fair trade was during a geography coursework project, and I remember thinking, ‘Why isn’t everything fair trade?’ Everyone knows about fair-trade bananas and coffee, but of course anything can be fair trade. Fair-trade fashion costs a bit more but allows those who make it to earn a decent living; to be able to take care of their families and live with dignity.

Emma Watson burnishes her ethical fashion credentials

Times Online have posted a great article about Emma’s involvement in People Three that features a few new promotionals from the shoot. I’ve also added the previously released ones that never where added to our gallery. Enjoy!

The thought of a young successful actress designing an ethical fashion range might seem, at first glance, as nauseating as Katy Perry’s public adoration of Russell Brand. Both just seem too dutiful to be taken seriously. Yet, even though I quietly hoped Emma Watson would become tangled at the first hemp-woven hurdle when the collection was announced in September, she has actually created a very clever range for the retailer-with-a-conscience, People Tree.

In terms of its ethical credibility, things don’t get more sound. Fair trade groups using organic cotton make the clothes by hand, and the work this collection provides helps to improve the lives of disadvantaged workers in Bangladesh, India and Nepal.

This, of course, we have seen before. What Watson, as Creative Advisor, has done differently, is that she has plaited together several fashionable threads to appeal directly to her peers. She might well be the face of Burberry, and have enjoyed at least one wardrobe deal with Chanel for her red carpet Harry Potter looks, but what Watson provides is an understanding that a bit of Hollister jersey blended into American Apparel basics, and topped off with humorous slogans, will mean that these clothes can transcend their worthy beginnings — and just become cool.
